Micro Journal

Micro Journal is an open-source DIY project that reimagines the typewriter as a modern, distraction-free writing device.

It is designed for one simple purpose: writing, without notifications, apps, or browser tabs. Just you and your words, with the convenience of digital storage and portability.

Through each revision, I experiment with hardware, design, portability, and usability to refine the writing experience. Every version is documented with build guides so anyone can make their own.

If you would rather have one built for you, custom builds are also available through my online shop.

Type of Revisions

Micro Journal evolves through a series of Revisions, each identified by the prefix Rev.

Rather than being simple version numbers, each revision represents a new cycle of ideas. Every one explores a different approach to focused writing, with its own character, design choices, and specific problem it tries to solve.

Here is what each revision represents:

  • Rev.2 – A Raspberry Pi–based writing device with a wide display and mechanical keyboard, combining focused writing with the flexibility of a full computer.

  • Rev.3 – A simple phone-based writing setup that combines a smartphone, keyboard, and hand rest for focused typing on the go.

  • Rev.4 – A mechanical keyboard that can instantly transform from an everyday keyboard into a standalone writing device.

  • Rev.5 – A compact ESP32 writing screen designed to work with your favorite external keyboard.

  • Rev.6 – An ESP32-based all-in-one writing device combining the display and keyboard in a portable form.

  • Rev.7 – An ESP32-based writing device with an e-ink display for a paper-like, easy-on-the-eyes writing experience.

  • Rev.8 – An ESP32-based writing device using a reflective LCD for fast response, low power consumption, and excellent visibility in bright environments.
